Girolamo Seripando (1493-1563) was an Italian scholar of Greek, Hebrew, philosophy and theology, a member of the Augustinian Order, bishop and cardinal. Born at Troja, Apulia [Italy], at fourteen he entered the Augustinian order. After studying Greek, Hebrew, philosophy and theology, he was appointed lecturer at Siena (1515), and Bologna (1517). In 1532 he was elected vicar-general and then, from 1539 to 1551, Prior General of the Augustian Order. In this capacity, he played a significant part in the Council of Trent (1546), where he tried - unsuccessfully - to mediate and avoid a complete break with the Lutherans. He became Archbishop of Salerno in 1554 and a cardinal in 1561. Seripando died at Trento [Italy].
