George Salmon (1819-1904) was an Irish scholar, mathematician and Anglican theologian. Born in Dubli, Ireland, he spend his entire professional life at Trinity College Dublin. He graduated from the College in 1839 in mathematics and in 1841 began a highly successful teaching career as a mathematician. In 1845 he was concurrently appointed to a position in theology, after having been ordained a priest in the Church of Ireland in 1844. In 1866 he resigned from his position in the mathematics department, to devote himself completely to theology. From 1888 until his death in 1904, he was Provost of the College.
