Gabriele Boccaccini (1969): A Biography in Pictures

1960s: Childhood, Elementary & Middle School =
I grew up in Florence with my parents and my brother Lorenzo in an apartment on Via Puccinotti. At the age of five, I started attending the nearby Cesare Battisti Elementary School, a year earlier than usual in Italy. I had already learned to write and read from my brother. Maestro Mario Bini was my beloved teacher. After the five-year course, in 1968 I transferred to the Gaetano Pieraccini Middle School.
During my elementary school years, my little world was confined to the neighborhood around the Giardino dell'Agricoltura, where I played every day with my friends. Our parents were very busy with work; my brother and I spent a lot of time with our maternal grandparents and summer holidays with them. When I started middle school, the center of my social life became Piazza della Vittoria, where my brother and I played soccer every day with the other neighborhood children. As was customary at the time, we were now given complete freedom without parental supervision. The company of our friends became our second family.
Besides school and sports, our entertainment was mainly music and television. Our parents introduced us to classical music (concerts and operas), which we immediately loved. Popular music was also an important part of our lives. The Sanremo Music Festival and the Zecchino d'Oro provided us with many songs we could listen to and sing with our friends.
After graduating from the University of Florence, my mother began a teaching career. Working in Calenzano and later in Scarperia and Isolotto (Florence), she came into contact with the educational experiences of Don Lorenzo Milani and Don Enzo Mazzi.
My father now worked as an opera director in Florence and elsewhere (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece), which meant my family was in constant contact with some of the most famous singers and conductors of the time. In the summer of 1964, my brother and I joined our parents for a month in Spain on one of my father's many theater tours.
A deep appreciation for education, culture, music, and opera are the lasting legacy I inherited from my childhood.
