Abstract

"Narrates the case of Edgardo Mortara, a Jewish child who, in 1858, at the age of six, was taken from his family by the pontifical police under orders from the Bologna Inquisitor Pier Gaetano Feletti. The abduction was due to the boy's having been baptized by a Christian maid, Anna Morisi, when as an infant he was gravely ill and she wished to help him recover. The child was taken to the Casa dei Catecumeni in Rome. He never returned to his parents, despite the intervention of Italian officials, of Jewish communities world-wide, and of the governments of several countries. The Church changed Edgardo's name to Pie Pillon, sent him to France, and provided him with an education. In 1873 he was ordained as a priest in Poitiers (France). The appendix (pp. 207-222) contains a description of other cases of forced conversion in Italy and in other European countries after the Mortara Affair."--
