{en} The Green Years (USA, 1946), directed by Victor Saville, starring Charles Coburn, Dean Stockwell.

An orphaned young boy is guided by his great-grandfather and strives to go to university to become a doctor. However, the boy's harsh grandfather stands in his way.

Robert Shannon (played by Dean Stockwell in the first half of the movie) is a young boy brought up in Scotland under domineering parentage. He survives much of the alienation of affection in his childhood with the help of his spirited grandfather (Charles Coburn) who always has the good sense to give the boy a helping hand when he needs it. When Robert becomes a young man (played by Tom Drake) he wants a vocation in the sciences, and it's his grandfather that comes to his aid again.
