{en} Romeo and Juliet [1] (USA, 1936), directed by George Cukor, starring Leslie Howard (Romeo) and Norma Shearer (Juliet), with John Barrymore (Mercutio), Basil Rathbone (Tybalt), and Andy Devine (Peter).

As in most Shakespeare-based screenplays, Cukor and his screenwriter Talbot Jennings cut much of the original play, using around 45% of it. The film received four Oscar nominations and for many years was considered one of the great MGM classics; however, neither critics nor the public responded enthusiastically.
