{en} Little Women (USA, 1933), directed by George Cukor, starring Katharine Hepburn (Jo), Joan Bennett (Amy), Frances Dee (Meg) and Jean Parker (Beth).

The first Little Women "talkie" was the third film adaptation of the 1868 novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott, after the two (lost) silent versions of 1917 and 1918. It chronicles the lives of the March sisters (Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth) in Concord, Massachusetts, during the 19th century.

Released during the Great Depression, it was enormously popular with critics and at the box office with its message of simplicity, frugality, and the resilience of the spirit. Three more major film adaptations will follow: in 1949, 1994 and 2019.
