{en} Hearts in Dixie [1] (USA, 1929), directed by Paul Sloane, starring Eugene Jackson, Dorothy Morrison.

Nappus, an elderly farmer, resents the fact that his daughter Chloe is married to a lazy layabout named Gummy, who allows Chloe to do all the house and farm work he himself should be doing. Chloe has to care for her two children, Trailia and Chiquapin, while managing all of Gummy's duties as well, and she is worn down by her labors. When Chloe and the child Trailia become dangerously sick, Gummy obtains the services of a Vodou doctor instead of a real medical doctor, with tragic results. Nappus decides he will somehow raise the money to send his grandson Chiquapin to medical school.

Paul Sloane's landmark musical drama holds immense historical weight as one of the very first all-talking sound features produced by a major Hollywood studio to boast a predominantly African-American cast. The film features a highly energetic performance by 12-year-old child actor Eugene Jackson as Chinquapin, a young boy whose grandfather sacrifices everything to send him north to medical school after a rural health tragedy, while also featuring an early, uncredited infant appearance by future Our Gang icon Matthew "Stymie" Beard.

Eugene Jackson plays Chinquapin in Fox's landmark early sound musical. The film was the first feature produced by a major studio with an all-Black cast and is consequently important both for the history of African-American cinema and for the history of the Black child performer. The film also contains an uncredited appearance by the very young Matthew “Stymie” Beard, who would soon become one of the best-known Our Gang children.
