Our Lady of Pompeii Church (1928) -- Church (New York)

The Parish of Our Lady of Pompeii was founded in 1892 by Father Pietro Bandini. It was the second national parish in New York City for Italians, following the Franciscan Parish of St. Anthony of Padua, established by Pamfilo of Magliano in 1866.

As it happened to the parish of St. Anthony, which occupied some other buildings before the construction of St. Anthony of Padua Church in 1888, so the Parish of Our Lady had its own church only in 1928. The pastor, Father Antonio Demo, personally selected Matthew Del Gaudio to be the architect of the church.

While the church was founded for Italian immigrants and remained a parish primarily for Italian Americans for most of its history, in recent times its parishioners have included a range of immigrant groups.
