Erwin Ramsdell Goodenough (1893-1965) was an American scholar. Born in Brooklyn, New York. Studied under George Foot Moore at Harvard and received his D. Phil from Oxford in 1923. Professor at Yale University from 1923. His work first challenged systematically the notion of the normativeness of Pharisaic Judaism in the Second Temple Period. Was one of the founders of IRAS, Institute on Religion in an Age of Science.
