Erode; ossia, Marianna <Italian> (1825) is an opera, set to music by Saverio Mercadante

~ Original libretto by Luigi Ricciuti.

Abstract

The libretto shows little knowledge of, or little respect for, the historical events narrated by Josephus. In this version of the story, Herod has killed the father of his wife Marianne. She wants to leave Jerusalem with the help of Varus, the Roman commander who is in love with her. The plot is discovered and Marianne dies of sorrow.
