Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) was an American social activist, scholar, writer and suffragist. Stanton is best remembered for organizing in 1843 the Seneca Falls convention at which she first called for women's right to vote. Raised as a strict Presbyterian, Stanton had learned Greek. In the 1880s she invited female Hebrew and Greek scholars to contribute to the first feminist commentary of the Bible, The Woman's Bible (1895-1998). She spent the last two decades of her life fighting for women's liberation from religious oppression, arguing that organized religion oppressed women and that the standard interpretation of the Bible subjugated them.
