David Herman (M / Ukraine, 1931), Holocaust survivor

Biography

David Herman was born on November 25, 1931, in the town of Schoirsch / Świrz in the Lviv region of Poland, in present-day Ukraine.

Despite persecution by the Germans and their helpers, he managed to survive in the ghetto day by day with his family. Fortunately and with great initiative, the family managed to escape into the forest.

He was only 10 years old when he had to hide in the forest, where he spent three long winters. He survived in a bunker dug in the earth and served as a sentry along with the group of partisans.

At the end of the war, he managed to reach Italy and Selvino. In Sciesopoli, the Selvino Children’s Home, he was reborn and received education and training for about a year in preparation for immigration to Israel. Then, with other Selvino children, he boarded the ship “ULUA – Chaim Arlozorov” in the port of Metaponto, Italy.
