Corneille Bonaventure Bertram (1531-1594) was a French scholar, Protestant clergyman, and one of most distinguished Christian Hebraists of the 16th century. Born at Thouars, France, he studied at Poitiers, Paris, Toulouse, and Cahors. To avoid persecution and death for his religious faith, he fled to Geneva, where, in 1567, he became professor of Oriental languages in the university. His work on the institutions of ancient Israel covers the Second Temple period. He often made use of rabbinic commentaries for the interpretation of the Bible. His translation of the Bible was also very popular in his time. Died at Lausanne, Switzerland.
