Claude Fleury (1640-1723) was a French scholar and Church historian. Born on December 6, 1640 in Paris, France, he graduated in Law from the College of Clermont and worked for some years as a lawyer. In 1667 he joined the Roman Catholic clergy and began his studies on Church History that made him a pioneer in the field and a popular author. The Moers des Israelites is actually a History of the Jewish people from Abraham to the time of Jesus, while the Moeurs des Chrétiens focuses on Christian origins. The first volume of Fleury's monumental Histoire ecclésiastique covers the first two centuries of the history of the Christian Church, after the Pentecost. Fleury died on July 14, 1723 in Paris, France.
