Biography

Harry (Herschel) Wajchendler (1926) and his younger brother Howard Chandler (Chaim Wajchendler, 1928) were born in Wierzbnik, Poland, to Liebke and Pearl Wajchendler. They were both forced labourers in the Starachowice labour camp, they were then interned in Auschwitz-Birkenau and Buchenwald and were finally liberated in Theresienstadt. They were the only survivors in the family: their parents and two other siblings perished in the Holocaust.

In August 1945 they went to England with the Windermere Children. There, they reunited with their cousin Jerzy Wegier, who had survived as a refugee in the Soviet Union.

Howard emigrated to Canada as a war orphan in 1947, while Harry stayed in London.
