According to Christian tradition, Timothy was one of Paul's Companions.

< Events : Circumcision of Timothy (16:1-5) -- Paul in Philippi (16:6-40) -- Paul in Thessalonica and Beroea (17:1-14) -- Paul in Corinth (18:1-21) >

Overview

In Acts of Apostles, Timothy is introduced as "a disciple" Paul met in Lystra at the beginning of Paul's Second Missionary Journey. Timothy was the son of a Jewish mother and a Greek father. Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him in his journey to Greece and had him circumcised "because of the Jews who were in those places."

Timothy was with Paul and Silas in Thessalonica and Boroea, where he remained after Paul was forced to flee to Athens. Timothy and Silas reunited with Paul in Corinth and together went back to Antioch.

Timothy also accompanied Paul in Paul's Last Visit to Greece.

The role Timothy had in the Second and Third Missionary Journeys of Paul is confirmed by the fact that his name is mentioned in several letters written by, or in the name of, Paul. Two of the Pastoral Letter are addressed to Timothy, see 1 Timothy and 2 Timothy.

Christian tradition claims that Timothy was appointed bishop of Ephesus by Paul in 65 CE and served in such a capacity until 97 CE when he died a martyr at the hands of a pagan mob because of his opposition to pagan cult.

The Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople claimed to preserve Timothy's relics, which went lost in the sack of the city. In 1945, the Cathedral of Termoli [Italy] claimed to have rediscovered the relics of the Saint hidden since 1239 beneath the pavement of the church.

Acts of Apostles

Circumcision of Timothy (Acts 16:1-5) -- [16.1] Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek... [16.3] Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

Paul in Thessalonica and Beroea (Acts 17:1-14) -- [17.14] Then the brothers immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and Timothy remained there. [17.15] Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and after receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they departed.

Paul in Corinth (Acts 18:1-21) -- [18.5] When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with the word, testifying to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus.

Paul in Ephesus (Acts 18:23--19:41) -- [19.22] And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

Paul's Last Visit to Greece (20:1--21:14) -- [20.4] Sopater of Berea, the son of Pyrrhus from Berea, accompanied him; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy; and the Asians, Tychicus and Trophimus.
