Overview
Jews, Christians, and Muslims in Slovakia
Christianity arrived in Slovakia in the 9th century. The first groups of Jews also came in the following centuries. For a short period, between the 16th and the 17th century, some part of Slovakia were ruled by the Ottoman Empire, but the Muslim presence vanished by the end of the 17th century.
Contemporary times
Today, the majority (around 70%) of Slovakian population is Roman Catholic (or Greek Catholic), with significant Lutheran and Christian Orthodox minorities. The Jewish population, that before the Holocaust reached the 100,000 units, is now reduced to a few hundred people. Around 5,000 Muslims live in the country, but no mosque has been built yet.
