Sennacherib was King of Assiria, from 705 to 681 BCE. He is remembered for his military campaigns against Babylon and Judah and for his building programs, notably at his capital, Nineveh.

History

Sennacherib was the son of his predecessor, Sargon II, and the father of his successor Esarhaddon.

Sennacherib and the Jews

In 701 BCE, Sennacherib conducted a military campaign against king Hezekiah of Judah, who incited by Egypt, had renounced Assyrian allegiance. Sennacherib conquered several cities and eventually besieged Jerusalem, Hezekiah's capital. At the end Hezekiah paid the tribute and remained on his throne as a vassal ruler.
