Overview
Islam has been in China for centuries and quotations from the Qur'an can be found in the early Chinese Islamic literature. However, the first complete translations of the Qur'an appeared only in the 20th century, by non Muslim scholars Lǐ Tiězhēng (1927) and Jī Juémí (1931).
Wáng Jìngzhāi was the first Muslim scholar to accomplish the task; the first edition of his work was completed in 1932 in Literary Chinese; revised editions were published by the author in 1943 and 1946 in Modern Chinese (and posthumously in 1958 in Taiwan.) Two other translations appeared in the 1940s, by Liú Jǐnbiāo (1943) and Yáng Zhòngmíng (1947).
What today has become the standard translation of the Qur'an in Chinese was also completed during those years by Mǎ Jiān between 1937 and 1945 but appeared only posthumously in 1981. Other translations have been published by Lín Sōng (1988) and Tóng Dàozhāng (1989).
