Priscilla & Aquila, wife and husband, were leading members of the early church and Paul's companions.

Overview

Priscilla and Aquila were among the closest companions of Paul of Tarsus. The Jewish couple came from Rome after the expulsion of Jews from the capital by Emperor Claudius in 49 CE and settled in Corinth. Paul met them there during Paul's Second Missionary Journey. Their house became the meeting place of the local Christian community. They were tentmakers, like Paul, and had the skill and means to lead the community.

Priscilla and Aquila followed Paul when he left for Ephesus. In Ephesus they instructed "more accurately" Apollos in the "way of the Lord". Paul mentions Priscilla and Aquila in 1 Corinthians. Apparently, the couple came back to Corinth with Apollos. After 54 CE, when Claudius died and the ban against the Jews was lifted, they must have returned to Rome as Paul in his Letter to the Romans greets them as "my fellow workers in Christ Jesus (who) risked their lives for me" (Rom 16:3-4).
