From 4 Enoch: : The Online Encyclopedia of Second Temple Judaism, and Christian and Islamic Origins
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Works on New Testament Times cover both the Jewish and the Greco-Roman environment in which the texts in the New Testament were composed. They serve as an introduction to the New Testament from the perspective of both Second Temple Judaism and the Greco-Roman World.

The model was first offered by Heidenthum und Judenthum (1857 Döllinger), book. The new genre allowed to unite within the same volume two genres that had remained largely separated, that of Second Temple Studies and that of New Testament Studies.

In more recent years the genre has been gradually replaced by the new attention to the parallel origins of Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism and to the problem of the Parting of the Ways.
