Literature, Jews Italy (subject)

The Image of the Jew in the Folklore and Literature of the Postrisorgimento

A. M. CANEPA

Italian anti-Semitism in the Postrisorgimento was represented chiefly in two distinct currents: the liberal and the clerical.

the anti-Jewish campaign of the clericals was essentially an indirect counterattack on liberalism and secularization and a by-product of political insecurity in search of a scapegoat.

In liberal Italy, parallel to the currents of open anti-Semitism outlined above, there existed an equivocal, largely negative conception of the Jew and of his religion in folklore and literature.
