Justification

Overview

"Justification" means "to become righteous." It implies Forgiveness of Sins. As such, the term should not be confused with Salvation, which more specifically refers to the Last Judgment.

Justification became a central concept in the early Jesus movement which focused on a message of Forgiveness of Sin through Jesus. There was a lot a discussion whether Justification was conditional (based on Faith in Jesus and Works, as in James) or unconditional (based on Faith in Jesus alone, as in Paul). Forgiveness was understood as a second chance provided to the sinners before the imminent Judgment. Through Baptism past sins were forgiven; the new-born person was expected to live blameless and obtain Salvation in the judgment, based on Works.
