Overview

Joseph of Nazareth

Christian iconography tends to convey an image of Joseph as an always dependable and caring guardian of Mary and Jesus. He is depicted as a devout and hard-working old man, self-conscious of the role that God assigned to him, since he was chosen to be Mary's husband. He is a "silent" and discreet present in all major "canonical" episodes dealing with Baby Jesus and Child Jesus. Only some non-canonical representations of his life at Nazareth offer a more intimate view of his personality and character. With his death he has completed his task and disappears.
