Lorenzo Da Ponte (Italy, United States, 1749-1838), librettist

Lorenzo Da Ponte (born Emanuele Conegliano) was an Italian, later American, opera librettist, poet and Roman Catholic priest of Jewish descent. He wrote the libretti for 28 operas by 11 composers, including three of Mozart's most celebrated operas, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte. After spending years in Austria and England, he married and in 1805 eventually settled in New York where he became an opera impresario and the first professor of Italian literature at Columbia College.

In 1823 Da Ponte published his autobiography in Italian, while living in New York. The text has been often reprinted and translated into English, French, German, Spanish and other languages. Numerous biographies of the author have also been authored.
