Aida Overton Walker

Aida Overton Walker (1880-1914) was an African-American vaudeville dancer and choreographer. Born in Richmond, VA in 1880, she started very young her career. With her husband, George Walker she formed one of the most admired and elegant African-American couples on stage. She strongly fought against the prejudices and stereotypes that affected race relations of the time, always promoting with her dance a more dignified image of black women. Her interpretation of Salome in 1908 and 1912 reflects these concerns. Her portrayal of the character was very different from that of the other dancers and actresses of her time. She downplayed the erotic aspects of the Salome dance. and offered the image of a dignified, sympathetic Salome. Overton Walker died prematurely (aged 34) in 1914, three years after the death of her husband.
