Marie Wittich (1868-1931) was a German opera singer. In 1905 in Berlin, she created the title role in Salome by Richard Strauss, in one of the most sensational performances in the history of opera. Wittrich reluctantly played the part. He regarded the role as indecent, especially the Dance of the Seven Veils, famously declaring at an early rehearsal: "I won't do it, I'm a respectable woman." A professional dancer had to stand in for her--a precedent that would often be repeated in the performance history of the opera.
