Carlo Sigonio (Carolus Sigonius; 1524-1584) was an Italian classical scholar, and historian, well known throughout Europe for his rigorous historical-critical method and professor at the Universities of Modena, Venice, Padua, and Bologna. His pioneering work on the institutions of the ancient state of Israel was one the first of its kind and dealt extensively with the Second Temple period, particularly with the Hasmonean period.
