Benito Arias Montano (1527-1598) was a Spanish scholar, orientalist and Hebraist, the editor of the Anterwerp Polyglot Bible (1568-73) and author of numerous works of biblical exegesis. A student at the Universities of Seville and Alcalá, joined the priesthood in 1559. Summoned in 1568 by King Philip II of Spain to supervise a new polyglot edition of the Bible (the so-called Anterwerp Polyglot, or Biblia regia). A fervent defender of the need to know biblical languages, and in particular Hebrew, for a correct understanding of Scripture, Arias also published several works of biblical exegesis in connection with the Polyglot.
