"Proceedings of the International Colloquium on Apocalypticism, Uppsala, August 12-17, 1979."

"The volume includes the papers given at a 1979 colloquium in Uppsala, Sweden. It addresses in turn the phenomenon of apocalypticism (14 essays), the genre of apocalypses (13) and their sociohistorical setting (6), and is concluded with an evaluation by K. Rudolph. Sixteen of the essays are in English, eighteen in German and French; nine concern Jewish (intertestamental) texts and themes, four the New Testament, three Christian and Gnostic texts, and two the Old Testament. Of particular interest are a history of research essay on earlier Christian apocalyptic (E. S. Fiorenza) and one on the problem of defining apocalyptic (L. Hartman). The colloquium began with no agreement on definition and ended the same way, so each article must be read within its own presuppositions.
