Alexandros was a member of the families of the Herodians and the Hasmoneans, the son of Herod the Great and Mariamne, and the brother of Aristobulus IV.

Overview

Alexandros was one of the sons of Herod the Great and Mariamne. He was then the scion of both the powerful families of the Herodians and the Hasmoneans.

Alexandros was still a child when his mother Mariamne was executed by Herod the Great in 29 BCE. Along with his brother Aristobulus IV, he was sent to be educated at the Imperial court of Rome in 20 BCE.

Alexandros married the Cappadocian Princess Glaphyra, the daughter of King Archelaus of Cappadocia. The couple had three children, two sons: Tigranes, Julius Alexander and an unnamed daughter.

When Alexandros and his brother returned from Rome in 12 BCE, they got directly involved in the fight for succession, especially against their half-brother Antipater II. At the end, Herod the Great had Aristobulus IV and Alexandros strangled at Sebaste on charges of treason in 7 BCE along with their grandmother Alexandra the Hasmonean. Antipater II was briefly raised to the rank of Herod's heir.

Aristobulus IV's children, however, were sent to Rome and lived to play important roles in the next generation of Jewish rulers.
