Casca: The Eternal Mercenary (1979) is a novel by Barry Sadler.
Abstract
By combining the legendary characters of Longinus and the Wandering Jew, Sgt Sadler, composer of the “Ballads of the Green Berets,” created a new hero, Casca, an immortal soldier. He was the one who drove the spear into Jesus on the cross, relieving him from his torment. For this, Jesus blessed or cursed him to an eternal existence, until the end of times. More than 25 sequels followed, covering Casca’s adventures over two thousand of wandering in all parts of the world—the first few were written by Sadler, the next dozen or so by ghostwriters and then after Sadler’s death, by Paul Dengelegi.
