List of works of literature on John the Baptist

Overview

Unlike other biblical character, John the Baptist does not emerge with distinctive traits in literature. The interest of the readers concentrates on the bizzarre circumstances of his death rather than on his life accomplishments, which gives him a quite marginal role in a drama where the real protagonists are others--Herod Antipas, Herodias and Salome. Soon he disappears even from the title of the plays and novels. Only in contemporary times there are a few attempts to revisit his biography, the most ambitious being that by American novelist Brooks Hansen in 2009. Too little and too late for establishing John th Baptist as a protagonist in Biblical fiction.
