Gen 30: 12-13

MT (RSV) – And Zilpah Leah's handmaid bore Jacob a second son. And Leah said: 'Happy am I! for the daughters will call me happy.' And she called his name Asher.

LXX - 12 And Zelpha the maid of Lea conceived yet again, and bore Jacob a second son. 13 And Lea said, I am blessed, for the women will pronounce me blessed; and she called his name, Aser.

Targum Pseudo-Jonathan - And Zilpha the handmaid of Leah bare a second son to Jakob. And Leah said, Praise shall be mine: for the daughters of Israel will praise me, as his children will be praised before the Lord for the goodness of the fruit of his land; and she called his name Asher. Targum Onkelos - And Zilpha the handmaid of Leah bare a second son to Jakob; and Leah said, Praise shall be mine; now will women praise me; and she called his name Asher.

Gen 35:26

MT (RSV) - and the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, that were born to him in Paddan-aram.

LXX - And the sons of Zelpha, the hand-maid of Lea; Gad and Aser. These are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Mesopotamia of Syria.

Gen 46:17

MT (RSV) - And the sons of Asher: Imnah, and Ishvah, and Ishvi, and Beriah, and Serah their sister; and the sons of Beriah: Heber, and Malchiel.

LXX - And the sons of Aser; Jemna, Jessua, and Jeul, and Baria, and Sara their sister. And the sons of Baria; Chobor, and Melchiil.

Gen 49:20 (Jacob’s Blessing)

MT (RSV) - As for Asher, his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties.

LXX - Aser, his bread shall be fat; and he shall yield dainties to princes.

Tg Pseudo-Jonathan - Happy is Asher whose fruitage is plenteous, and whose land aboundeth in balsams and costly perfumes. [Of happy Asher how fertile is the land! His land shall satisfy with dainties the kings of the sons of Israel.

Tg Onkelos –The land of Asher will be good; and he shall be nourished with the dainties of kings.

Exd 1:2

MT (RSV) - 1 Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt with Jacob; every man came with his household: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

LXX - These are the names of the sons of Israel that came into Egypt together with Jacob their father; they came in each with their whole family. 2 Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Judas, 3 Issachar, Zabulon, Benjamin, 4 Dan and Nephthalim, Gad and Aser.

Deu 27:13

Deu 33:24-25

RSV - And of Asher he said: Blessed be Asher above sons; let him be the favoured of his brethren, and let him dip his foot in oil. Iron and brass shall be thy bars; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be.

LXX - And to Aser he said, Aser is blessed with children; and he shall be acceptable to his brethren: he shall dip his foot in oil. 25 His sandal shall be iron and brass; as thy days, so shall be thy strength.

Tg Pseudo-Jonathan - And Mosheh the prophet of the Lord blessed the tribe of Asher, and said: Blessed is Asher of the sons of Jakob. He will be acceptable to his brethren, and will supply them with provender in the years of release: his border will produce many olives yielding oil, enough for him to bathe in it even his feet. The tribe of Asher be sound[2] as iron, and their feet‑strong as brass in walking on the stony rocks; and as the days of their youth so shall they be strong in their age. [JER. And Mosheh the prophet of the Lord blessed the tribe of Asher, and said: Asher will be blessed of the children; he will be acceptable to his brethren, in the release of the land, for his ground shall produce oil like water. Behold, this people of Beth Asher are sound as iron and strong as brass; as the days of their youth so will be the days of their age.]

Tg Onkelos - And of Asher he said: Blessed shall be Asher with the blessings of children: let him be acceptable to his brethren, and be nourished with the dainties of kings: strong shalt thou be as iron and brass, and as the days of thy youth shall be thy strength.

1Ch 2:1-2

New Testament Texts

Luke 2:36-38

NRSV - There was also a prophet, Anna[j] the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. 38 At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child[k] to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
