Overview

The Uruguayans are the multi-ethnic citizens of Uruguay (circa 18 million). Aside from the large indigenous population, most Uruguayans or their ancestors came from other countries (mainly Spain) within the past five centuries, as a result of immigration. They primarily speak the Spanish language.

Most Uruguayans today live within the borders of independent Uruguay (circa 17 million). There are many Uruguayans in nearby Argentina, and sizeable populations of immigrants and their descendants in the United States, Canada, Sweden, and other countries.
