According to Christian traditions, Relics of Matthew are preserved in the Cathedral of Salerno, Campania [Italy].

Overview

The Salerno Tradition

In 1081 the body of Matthew was rediscovered and buried in the crypt of the Cathedral of Salerno [Italy].

It is said that the relics of Saint Matthew were for many years in the city of Naddaver in Ethiopia, where he suffered his martyrdom, but were transferred to Salerno on May 6, 954, where they remained concealed in a cave, for protection, for over a hundred years, until they were rediscovered.

The Tomb of Matthew is still today preserved in the crypt of the Cathedral. A reliquary containing the arm of Matthew is carried in procession on the occasion of religious festivities.
