After the death of Roland de Vaux in September 1971, Pierre Benoit succeeded him as editor-in-chief of the International Team and the DJD series.

In 1972 Spanish Jesuit scholar Jose O'Callagan proposed to identify Greek papyri fragments from Cave 7 as portions of the New Testament.

In 1976 Milik published the Qumran fragments of 1 Enoch. In 1977 the 6th volume of the DJD series appeared with more fragments from Cave 4; it remained the only volume published in the series in the decade. The same year the Temple Scroll (discovered probably in 1956) was first published by Yigael Yadin; it shifted the emphasis from the theological to the legal-halakhic elements of the scrolls.
