Cinema (1850s) -- History of research -- Overview

At the very end of the 19th century, the first films dealing with Jewish, Christian and Rabbinic Origins were reenactments of episodes of the Life of Jesus, especially of his Passion. It all started with the filmization of scenes from the ancient mystery plays still performed in some European villages like Horitz/Horice in Bohemia [Czech Republic] and Oberammergau in Bavaria [Germany]. Then the filmmakers felt free to reenact episodes from the life and ministry of Jesus, following the traditional Christian iconography and introducing for the first times special effects (see Méliès 1899).
