Hugh Anderson (1920-1983) was a Scottish scholar.
Biography
Hugh Anderson was born May 18, 1920 in Ayrhire and was educated at Kilmarnock Academy and the University of Glasgow where he graduated in classics and Semitic languages before studying divinity and complete a PhD.
After a one-year stay in Cairo, Egypt in 1945, he returned to a junior academic post at Glasgow University in 1946 and, five years later, became minister of Trinity Church in Pollokshields.
Anderson moved to the United States when he was appointed professor of Biblical Theology at Duke University in North Carolina. He made a reputation as a specialist in the Jewish literature produced at the time of the New Testament.
He then returned to Scotland, being professor of New Testament at the University of Edinburgh for nearly 20 years.
Hugh Anderson died January 14, 2003.
