Ernst Hammerschmidt (1928-1993) was a German scholar and professor for African studies at the University of Hamburg.

==Biography== Hammerschmidt studied philosophy, theology, Oriental languages and law at the Universities of Bamberg, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Wien, Münster and Oxford. From 1970 to 1990 he taught at the University of Hamburg. Apart from his many publications in Ethiopian studies in 1977 he founded the series „Aethiopistische Forschungen“, „the only scholarly monograph series specializing exclusively in Ethiopian studies“ (S. Uhlig, in: Encyclopaedia Aethiopica vol. 2, p. 994).
