{it} Il vangelo secondo Matteo <Italian> / The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964) is a feature film (sound, B&W), directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini.

The life of Jesus Christ according to the Gospel of Matthew. Pasolini shows Christ as a Marxist avant-la-lettre, using the text of the gospel of Matthew.

Based solely on the Gospel of Matthew and dedicated “alla cara, lieta, familiare memoria di Giovanni XXIII” by the Marxist director, is one of the universally acknowledged masterpieces of religious cinema. Attempt to make Jesus more realistic and less a Hollywood concoction involves non-professional actors from a peasant location in Southern Italy in a choral and touching reenactment of the life of Jesus as the advocate of the poor and oppressed.

Produced and released in Italy (1964). Distributed internationally.
