In the [[Gospel of Luke]], the Annunciation to Mary takes the role that in the [[Gospel of Matthew]] is played by the [[Annunciation to Joseph]]. It was Mary (not Joseph) who received the revelation of the true identity of the child.


In the harmonized narrative of the Protoevangelium of James, the Annunciation to Mary (followed by the [[Visitation of Mary]]) precedes the [[Annunciation to Joseph]]. The episode itself is framed by the legend of Mary weaving the veil of the Temple.
