Ernst Hammerschmidt (1928-1993) was a German scholar and professor for African studies at the University of Hamburg.

Hammerschmidt studied philosophy, theology, Oriental languages and law at the Universities of Bamberg, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Wien, Münster and Oxford. From 1970 to 1990 he taught at the University of Hamburg.
