According to Jewish (Christian and Islamic) traditions, Samuel was a prophet who ruled Israel at the end of the period of the Judges and anointed kings Saul and David.

Hannah had no children, but when Eli saw her in distress, he blessed her. Hannah generated Samuel and gave Samuel to Eli to be raised in the Temple. Samuel grew in wisdom. When Samuel was still a boy (11 years old according to Josephus), he received a call from God to be a prophet.

(2.1) Hannah prayed and said, “My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in my God.... 18 Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy wearing a linen ephod... 21 And the Lord took note of Hannah; she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord... 26 And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the Lord, and also with men.
