Later Christian traditions would identify him as the apostle [[Matthias]] appointed to replace [[Judas Iscariot]] after the death of Jesus, and would make him the first Bishop of [[Caeserea Maritima]].
A medieval legend identified him with Saint [[Amadour]] and held him to be the husband of [[Veronica]] and the founder of the French sanctuary at Rocamadour, where his remains are still venerated.
