Overview
Alexandros was one of the sons of Herod the Great and Mariamne. He was then the scion of both the powerful families of the Herodians and the Hasmoneans.
Alexandros was still a child when his mother Mariamne was executed by Herod the Great in 29 BCE. Along with his brother Aristobulus IV, he was sent to be educated at the Imperial court of Rome in 20 BCE.
Alexandros married the Cappadocian Princess Glaphyra, the daughter of King Archelaus of Cappadocia. The couple had three children, two sons: Tigranes V, Julius Alexander and an unnamed daughter.
When Alexandros and his brother returned from Rome in 12 BCE, they got directly involved in the fight for succession, especially against their half-brother Antipater II. At the end, Herod the Great had Aristobulus IV and Alexandros strangled at Sebaste on charges of treason in 7 BCE along with their grandmother Alexandra the Hasmonean. Antipater II was briefly raised to the rank of Herod's heir.
Alexandros' children, Tigranes V and Julius Alexander, were forced to remain in Herod's custody in Jerusalem with their cousins. At the death of Herod in 4 BCE they decided to return to Cappadocia. Unlike their cousins, they disinherited their Jewish descent, but like them, lived their lives as Hellenistic princes, serving in the Roman Imperial administration.
