Overview
Aristobulus IV was one of the sons of Herod the Great and Mariamne. He was then the scion of both the powerful families of the Herodians and the Hasmoneans.
Aristobulus IV was only 3 when his mother Mariamne was executed by Herod the Great. At age 12, along with his brother Alexandros, he was sent to be educated at the Imperial court of Rome in 20 BCE.
Aristobulus IV married his cousin Berenice I, the daughter of Herod's sister Salome I. The couple had five children: Herod of Chalcis, Herod Agrippa I, Herodias, Mariamne III and Aristobulus Minor.
When Aristobulus IV and his brother returned from Rome in 12 BCE, they got directly involved in the fight for succession, especially against their half-brother Antipater II. At the end, Herod the Great had Aristobulus IV and Alexandros strangled at Sebaste on charges of treason in 7 BCE along with their grandmother Alexandra the Hasmonean. Antipater II was briefly raised to the rank of Herod's heir.
Aristobulus IV's children, however, were sent to Rome and lived to play important roles in the next generation of Jewish rulers.
