Averincev Sergej Sergeyevich (1937-2004) was a Russian scholar.

Biography

Graduated from Moscow University, in Classical Philology. Obtained his Ph.D. Degree in 1967, and his Habilitation Degree in 1979.

His research interests were very wide; among other fields, he was an expert in Late Classics and Early Christianity, with a special interest in Early Byzantine Literature.

Was a research associate at the Institute of the World Literature (1971-1991, Head of the Classical Studies Department from 1981 to 1991), a professor at Moscow University (1989-1994), a professor at the Institute of Slavistics at Vienna University (1994-2004).

Was a Associate Member of the Russian Academy of Science since 1987, and an Academician of the Russian Academy of Science since 2003. Was Head of the Russian Biblical Society since 1990.

Was awarded the USSR State Prize in 1990 and the Russian Federation State Prize in 1996.
