==Overview==
Dor was an ancient Canaanite city.
In the Persian period Dor was a colony of [[Sidon]]. In ca. 460 BCE it was sized by the Athenians as an outpost for their navy in their alliance with the Egyptians against the Persians.
Dor became a Ptolemaic fortress and was besieged by Antiochus VII. Under the Romans, it was granted a semi-autonomous status, which the city kept throughout the reign of Herod and his successors. According to Josephus a synagogue existed there before the destruction of the second Temple.
The city continued to flourish in the Byzantine period as attested by the presence of a church.
